SUSSEX TOP ATTRACTIONS

LINKS

Please note this page of links is maintained separately by different sources to the rest of the Sussex Top Attractions web site.

ACCOMMODATION

For accommodation information and other Sussex tourist information:
if you know roughly whereabouts in Sussex you want to stay contact one of the Tourist Information Centres.

Historic Houses and Gardens:
Two good sources of information for historic houses, corporate entertaining and wedding locations can be found at Hudson's Historic Houses and Gardens and Johansens Historic Houses, Castles and Gardens

For gardens the best results are obtained by making a Google search on "Sussex gardens", and there's also the National Gardens Scheme

Local Radio
These may be called the principal ones, but there are many others with limited geographical coverage and specialist content.  Again, for best results Google "Sussex Radio Stations".

The BBC Southern Counties Radio website for Sussex and Surrey
Southern FM
         Sovereign Radio

Gatwick Airport Info

Sussex Churches
There are hundreds of Parish Churches in Sussex, and very many are open during the daytime for visitors.  Besides being principally places of worship, these parish churches are also a vast collection of interesting architecture, history, furnishings, statuary, stained glass and much else besides.
See also the Sacred Sussex web pages, and Chichester Cathedral

Approved Marriage Premises
There are now very many venues in East and West Sussex where you can be married, and here are the links for venues in East Sussex and for West Sussex
It is the responsibility of the County Councils to license premises for marriages.

The Arts in Sussex

For caravan and camp sites
A very useful new site is the Campsite and Caravansite finder:  find all the top caravan sites, campsites and camping parks all over England.
At the time of writing there are 42 entries for East Sussex, and 45 for West Sussex, with a good Googlemap which shows exactly where they are with added useful details.  This is the one to use.

UK Camp Site
- the Internet directory for caravanners and campers.
The Dedicated Partnership's UK Camp Site   (these two are different although they have the same name) and
The Camping and Caravanning Club

A Google search on "Sussex Camp Sites" and ditto for caravan sites also produces plenty of results.

Cycling around Sussex
For best results look at the Sustrans web pages, and put "Sussex" into their search boxes.
Sustrans is the UK's leading sustainable transport charity.
It is also associated with the National Cycle Network

The County Councils' tourism and leisure pages within:
East Sussex County Council
West Sussex County Council
Brighton and Hove Unitary Authority

By far the most comprehensive list of Sussex links, Sussex information, local newspapers, local radio, the arts, leisure and tourism is the list provided by the East Sussex County Council Information Services Unit - the ISU, managed by the Libraries, Information and Arts Service.  ESCIS  holds information about 8174 organisations based in East Sussex and Brighton and Hove [Mar 2009].

There is an equivalent in West Sussex; start at http://doompalm.westsussex.gov.uk/cgi-bin/civis_server.sh   which lists over 3,000 local clubs and organisations in that area.

The Good Pub Guide and The Good Guide to Britain contain useful Sussex information: visit Good Guides
There's only one major brewery in Sussex now - Harveys in Lewes.

The Newhaven - Dieppe crossing is operated by Transmanche Ferries
The Newhaven - Le Havre crossing is no longer operated.

Maps and Guides
The Ordnance Survey pages provide excellent up to date maps of the whole of the UK.

Otherwise for maps and mapping visit www.streetmap.co.uk (who provide the maps for the pages on this site); and Googlemaps are excellent in every way.  Their satellite pictures give you a very good idea of how rural and unspoilt most of Sussex really is.

Maps, guides and everything else to do with travel can be purchased at www.mapsworldwide.co.uk as well as www.elstead.co.uk and www.stanfords.co.uk

Weather Forecasts The Meteorological Office and the BBC Weather Centre

Tide times:  The best information is from the UK Hydrographic Office.  Please take care if you want tide times in the Chichester area, or anywhere near the Solent, but elsewhere in Sussex from Rye to Bognor Regis you can add or subtract a few minutes to Brighton or Eastbourne tide times. Also note if the tables give GMT or BST times.
